The Joy and Impact of Scale Modeling in My Life

°í·ÁÀÇ´ë

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by scale models. My passion for this hobby began when my father gifted me a B-29 model during my childhood. This seemingly simple present ignited a lifelong interest in modeling and, subsequently, a broader understanding of history and technology.

During my middle school years, I befriended the son of the president of Academy Science, a scale model company. This friendship provided me with unique insights into the world of scale modeling and further fueled my passion.

As a current surgeon, I have found that the hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills required in building and painting scale models have translated positively into my surgical practice. The immersive experience of assembling models brings me immense joy and satisfaction, while simultaneously honing valuable skills.

My interest in scale modeling has led me to delve deeper into the history of World War II, gaining extensive knowledge about warfare, weapons systems, and military equipment. I am particularly intrigued by individual gear and firearms, which inspired me to explore painting miniature figures. The challenge of capturing the smallest details and accurately representing reality has always fascinated me.

In conclusion, building scale models has had a significant impact on my life, both personally and professionally. This hobby has not only provided me with a creative outlet and a source of joy but also allowed me to develop valuable skills that have contributed to my career as a surgeon. Moreover, it has expanded my knowledge and appreciation of history, fostering a lifelong curiosity about the world and its past.

Figure 1. The original prototype is received from the sculptor in an unpainted state, as shown in the left photo. The artist then applies appropriate colors to the prototype, completing the paint job. The transformation after the paint job is completed is shown in the right photo, which is then sent to the manufacturer. This completed image is used for the product's box packaging design, showcasing the finished product's appearance to consumers. Through this process, the prototype maker and manufacturer work together to increase the product's quality and present it to the market.

Figure 2. The photo shows the SS elite forces during the Battle of Kharkov* in World War II. The size of the figurine is approximately 54mm, and its scale can be estimated from the image on the right. *The Battle of Kharkov was a series of World War II clashes between Axis and Soviet forces in Eastern Ukraine

Figure 3. 1/9 scale busts are a traditional genre in the world of figurines, known for their decorative appeal and versatility in various expressions. This figurine represents a British paratrooper from the airborne forces deployed in the Arnhem region of the Netherlands during World War II (Right). Efforts were made to accurately represent the camouflage pattern.
